Unmyelinated nerves in cross section
Unmyelinated nerves have usually a small diameter and are not always easily visualized in sections. Many of these nerves belong to the autonomic nervous system. They do not have the reticulated appearance of the myelinated nerves because they are unmyelinated.
The perineurium of the nerves is clearly visible In this image of cross-sectioned nerves, highlighted in blue. Most nuclei seen inside the nerves belong to Schwann cells and some of them to endothelial cells of blood capillaries.
Unmyelinated nerve (cross section). Staining: HE. Medium magnification.
