ENDOCHONDRAL OSSIFICATION – 5
The red rectangle indicates an area of the bone collar that is developing in the wall of the bone presented in a higher magnificaton in the lower figure.
The Zone of hypertrophic cartilage of the epiphyseal disc highlighted in light green.
The cartilaginous matrix partitions that remained after the chondrocytes died are highlighted in dark green. Osteoblasts will settle over these partitions, secrete bone extracellular matrix, and transform into osteocytes.
Bone produced in the middle collar of the vertebra is highlighted in red.
The longitudinal growth of the bone results from the proliferation od chondroblasts at the epiphyseal plate.
