ENDOCHONDRAL OSSIFICATION – 2
A very suitable material for studying endochondral ossification are sections of vertebrae of the tail of rodents.
In the image of the vertebra shown in the figure, ossification is already well underway. This will be discussed in detail in the following pages.
The image shows a longitudinal section of one of these vertebrae. The bone extracellular matrix is highlighted in red. Above and below the vertebra are portions of intervertebral discs (in dark yellow).
