At a more advanced stage larger areas of bone matrix appear in the mesenchymal membrane, such as the one highlighted in orange. It is surrounded by osteoblasts and osteoprogenitor cells (in blue).
Notice two osteocytes (in green) inside the matrix.
This is an initial step of bone trabecula formation. During following stages of osteogenesis these embryonic bone trabeculae join to slowly form a bone.
Another stretch of a trabecula can be seen on the upper border of the image.
