At more advanced stages larger but still very small areas of bone matrix can be seen such as the one in the figure (highlighted in orange). It is surrounded by osteoblasts and osteoprogenitor cells (in blue).
Within the matrix, observe two osteocytes (in green).
This is the beginning of the formation of part of a bone trabecula. In following stages of osteogenesis, parts of many other bone trabeculae join to form the entire bone.
