EPIPHYSEAL DISC – 5
The epiphyseal disc is placed adjacent to the epiphysis.
The disk is formed by five Regions or Zones. Although they are seen as bands in sections, the Zones have the shape of a disk. They are continuous with each other, but the boundaries between each zone and the next are not well defined.

Zones of the epiphysis
1 – Zone of resting cartilage
2 – Zone of proliferation
3 – Zone of hypertrophyc cartilage
4 – Zone of calcification
5 – Zone of ossification
The first four zones are formed of cartilaginous tissue and new bone tissue is present in the last zone.
The image shows these zones. They will be described in detail on the next pages.
