CONNECTIVE TISSUE PROPER – 3
The dense connective tissue has a large amount of fibrillar extracellular matrix.
The extracellular matrix of the dense dense irregular connective tissue is composed primarily of collagen fibers of varying thicknesses, arranged in various directions besides a variable amounts of elastic and reticular fibrils, but they are not seen with HE staining
As a result of the diverse orientation of its collagen fibers, this tissue resists well to mechanical pressure and traction.
The types of resident cells in this type of connective tissue are similar to those found in the loose connective tissue, with a high prevalence of fibroblasts and fibrocytes.
