9-36 Nervous tissue

NERVOUS SYSTEM
GANGLION
Ganglia are clusters of neurons of the peripheral nervous system enveloped by a thin layer of dense connective tissue.
Imagens of ganglia show neuronal cell bodies with large nuclei that have loose chromatin and voluminous, strongly stained nucleoli. Their cytoplasm often contains small granules that represent groups of cisternae of the rough endoplasm reticulum involved in protein synthesis.
Each neuron is surrouned by smaller flat cells called neuronal satellite cells or glial satellite cells, highlighted in whitw/clear yellow in the upper figure.
Lower figure: neurons of a ganglion. Cytoplasm of cell bodies highlighted in pink, nuclei in blue, nucleoli in yellow and satellite cells in green.
