PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

NERVES – 3

Upper image: part of a thick nerve cross-section showing four of its fascicles. Next to it a thin isolated nerve.
An epineurium (highlighted in blue) surrounds the whole thick nerve. Its connective tissue extends into the nerve inside and surrounds the various fascicles (highlighted in red).
A perineurium (highlighted in dark green) surrounds each fascicle. Very thin nerves as the one indicated by the arrow are covered by a perineuron.
The nerve fibers form separate bundles. The spaces between them are artificial and result from the histological tissue preparation.

Nerve (cross section). Staining: HE. Very small magnification.
