CELLS OF THE NERVOUS TISSUE

NEUROGLIA – 2

PROTOPLASMIC ASTROCYTES – 1

The astrocytes shown in the figure were prepared wity a metal precipitation technique. What is seen in the image are collections of metal atoms precipitated over the astrocyte cell bodies and processes. The yellowish color of the section results from the metal solution used to reveal the cells.
This section of the gray matter of the brain shows protoplastic astrocytes highlighted in light blue.
This type of astrocyte has many short branched processes placed very close one to another. They will be better seen in the following page.
The thin lines are neuronal cell processes and the thicker ones are blood capillaries.

Brain. Metal impregnation. Small magnification.
