Dense irregular connective tissue
The dense iregular connective tissue contains a large amount of fibrillar extracellular matrix, consisting mainly of collagen fibers.
The fibers are arranged in many different directions rather than being organized in parallel. The tissue also contains variable amounts of elastic and reticular fibers, although these fibers are generally not visible in routinely H&E-stained preparations.
The irregular arrangement and diverse orientation of the collagen fibers provide resistance to mechanical pressure and moderate traction originated from various directions.
The types of resident cells in this type of connective tissue are similar to those of the loose connective tissue, with a high prevalence of fibroblasts and fibrocytes, less active fibrolasts.
