INTRAMEMBRANOUS OSSIFICATION – 3

At a more advanced stage of intramembranous ossification larger areas of bone matrix appear in the mesenchymal membrane, such as the one highlighted in orange. It is surrounded by osteoblasts and osteoprogenitor cells (in blue).
Notice two osteocytes (in green) inside the matrix.
This is an initial stage of formation a bone trabecula. In the following stages of osteogenesis you will see that embryonic bone trabeculae join to slowly form an entire bone.
Another stretch of a trabecula can be seen on the upper border of the image.
