Lymph nodes are small organs distributed throughout the body through which lymph flows. Within the lymph nodes, lymph is “filtered” by macrophages, as they have the opportunity to encounter antigens carried by the lymph, destroy microorganisms, and trigger an immune response.
In the figure, the arrows point to macrophages located inside a lymph node.
Note that the cytoplasm of one of the macrophages appears “foamy” or vacuolated. This is likely due to the large number of vacuoles present in its cytoplasm.
