9-32 Nervous tissue

PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

NERVES – 6

Longitudinal sections of large nerves.

Observe in the upper figure two thick nerve fascicles, one in the upper portion of the figure and another occupying about 2/3 of the lower portion of the figure.
In the lower figure, at a higher magnification, observe the appearance of the fibers as a network. This is caused by the absence of myelin, which was dissolved when preparing the section.

It is not always easy to recognize and diagnose a longitudinally sectioned nerve. Sometimes it can be confused with smooth muscle tissue or dense regular connective tissue. In case of doubts, review these tissues in their chapters.
