CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

SPINAL CORD – 4

The image shows the interface between the gray matter of the spinal cord and the white matter.
The gray matter is occupied by neuronal cell bodies, dendrites and axons.

The white matter is almost entirely occupied by bundles of nerve fibers. As most of these fibers are placed along the spinal cord, they are seen cross-sectioned.
Nerve fibers consist of an axon + the cell that surrounds it. The axons appear mostly unstained due to the absence of myelin, which was dissolved during the preparation of this histological section.
The darker structures (highlighted in dark blue) inside the spaces of the axons where myelin was present, are transversely sectioned axons.

Spinal cord. Staining: HE. Medium magnification.
