9-18 Nervous tissue

MAIN FEATURES ABOUT THE ANATOMY OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
CEREBELUM – 1

The cerebellum is formed by numerous folded sheets of nervous tissue, each of them called a folium (plural: folia). The distribution of the folia is visible on the organ’s surface.

The lower figure shows a section of a cerebellum. The sectioned folia are clearly visible and one folium is labeled in red.

Distribution of the white and gray matter:
– a large part of white matter (labeled with a light tone of blue) forms the portion that connects the cerebellum with the white matter of the brain. The white matter of the cerebellum extends inside each folia forming its core.
– the gray matter is a layer of nervous tissue that covers the white matter of each folia.
