CELLS OF THE NERVOUS TISSUE

NEUROGLIA – 7

OLIGODENDROCYTES

They are so called oligodendrocytes because they have fewer cell processes than the other glial cells.
They perform very important functions for the functioning of the nervous tissue because axons in the central nervous system are covered by folds of oligodendrocyte cytoplasm or by their extensions and their membranes may produce myelin. In this way the oligodendrocytes protect and isolate the axons during the transmission of nervous impulses.
