8-8 Muscle tissue

CARDIAC MUSCLE – 2
The upper figure shows cardiac muscle fibers sectioned longitudinally, and the lower figure cross-sectioned fibers.
Observe in both figures the main histological characteristics of cardiac muscle fibers.
– Fibers organized in bundles
– Nuclei located centrally in the cells – highlighted in green after clicking or using the mouse. The position of the nuclei can be better observed in cross-sections of the fibers.
– Intercalated disks can be observed in longitudinal sections. They are seen as darker staining lines that are regions of intercellular junctions between the extremities of cardiac muscle cells. They are placed transversely to the fibers. Sometimes the intercalated disks may be poorly stained after hematoxylin and eosin staining.
Some of disks of the upper figure become highlighted in light green.
