THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE OSTEOCYTES IN BONES – 2
The figures show the features that characterize non-lamellar and lamellar bones.
The two upper figures show non-lamellar bone. Its collagen fibers run in many directions and the osteocytes are irregularly positioned among the fibers.
In the lamellar bone, the collagen fibers are organized in parallel and each set of fibers forms a bone lamella. From lamella to lamella, they fibers are disposed in slightly different angles, but in each lamella theey keep parallel one to another. The figure shows three bone lamellae and the osteocytes are arranged in a regular manner between them.
