7-9 BONE

THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE OSTEOCYTES IN BONES – 2
The figures show important features that characterize non-lamellar and lamellar bones.

The two upper figures show non-lamellar bone. Its collagen fibers run in many directions and the osteocytes are irregularly positioned throughout the extracellular matrix.

In the lamellar bone, the collagen fibers are organized and each set of fibers forms a bone lamella. The fibers stay parallel inside each lamella. From lamella to lamella, they form diverse angles, but the fibers keep parallel one to another in each lamella. The figure shows three bone lamellae. The osteocytes are arranged in a regular manner between the bone lamellae.
