ENDOCHONDRAL OSSIFICATION – 2
A very suitable material for studying endochondral ossification are the vertebrae that form the tail of rodents.

The image shows a longitudinal section of one vertebra of a mouse fetus (highlighted in red). Above and below the vertebra are portions of intervertebral disks (in dark yellow).
In the vertebra of this figure the ossification process is already well underway. The following pages will present some details of this event.
