INTRAMEMBRANOUS OSSIFICATION – 1
The ossification of several bones of the skull is a good example of this type of ossification.
During fetal life, a process of ossification occurs within in a mesenchymal membrane situated beneath the skin of the skull.
The figure shows an image of a histological section of this mesenchymal membrane. Many nuclei are seen, mostly of mesenchymal cells.
In one place (highlighted in green), a small condensation of cells can be seen. These condensations of mesenchymal cells are usually groups of cells that are differentiating into tissues and structures during intrauterine life.
