2-19 Covering epithelia

STRATIFIED SQUAMOUS EPITHELIUM – 4
The cytoplasm of the cells of the stratified squamous epithelium of the vaginal mucosa generally stains poorly with HE (because their cytoplasm contains much glycogen, which is extracted during the histological procedure). This allows the cell contours to be observed very clearly.
The layers can be better recognized after moving the mouse or clicking on the image.
This is thus an epithelium with many layers of cells, that have different shapes at different heights of the epithelium and whose superficial cells are squamous.
Oserve the connective tissue under the epithhelial layer.

Vaginal epithelium. Hematoxylin and eosin. Medium magnification.
