The type of connective tissue that has been analyzed so far in this chapter is the most common type of non-specialized connective tissue of the body. It is called connective tissue properand is found in the skin and inside and around most organs.
The most common cells of this tissue are the fibroblasts. They makemake up most of the cells visible in the image. Fibroblasts are elongated cells located placed between the collagen fibers and usually have elongated nuclei. Their cytoplasm is often thin and may therefore be difficult to see.
Fibroblasts are essential for the maintenance and function of connective tissue because they synthesize and secrete much of its extracellular matrix (ECM). They can also break down and reabsorb components of the matrix. In this way, fibroblasts help regulate the amount and composition of the ECM in response to signals produced locally or elsewhere in the body.

– Collagen fibers — stained pink by eosin. They differ in size, thickness, and orientation.
– Fibroblasts — located between the collagen fibers. They are mainly recognized by their elongated nuclei because their thin cytoplasm is often difficult to distinguish.
