ENDOCHONDRAL OSSIFICATION – 2
A very suitable material for studying endochondral ossification are the vertebrae of the tail of fetal rodents.
The image shows a longitudinal section of one vertebra of a mouse fetus (highlighted in red). Above and below the vertebra are portions of intervertebral disks (in brown color).
The ossification process is already ongoing in this vertebra. The following pages will present some details of this event.
Can you identify some of the zones of the ossification process?
Endochondral ossification. Staining: HE. Magnification: medium.
