For this reason, they are called mineralized or calcified tissues.<br \/>\nBecause of their hardness, bone and teeth cannot normally be sectioned with a standard microtome. However, specialized microtomes and techniques can be used to obtain sections of these tissues.<br \/>\nOne approach is to first remove the mineral salts from the tissue, a process called decalcification.
