Most  are placed lenghwise along the cord and, therefore, seen cross-sectioned in transversely sectioned cords.<br \/>\nThe myelinated axons are seen enclosed by \"round empty spaces\". This happens because the myelin layer that surrounded each axon was dissolved during the preparation of the sections.
