Most of its volume is occupied by myelinated axons arranged in bundles. Under the microscope a section of the white matter has far fewer nuclei than the gray matter. Most of them are nuclei of neuroglial cells (highlighted in blue). Among this group of cells, oligodendrocytes are especially numerous, as they surround the axonal extensions of the neurons.
