Most are dying, or fragmented or already dead. The lacunae that they occupied contain remainings of the cells or appear empty.<br \/>\nThe walls of cartilage extracellular matrix, that once delimited the areas occupied by the chondrocytes are highlighted in turquoise blue.<br \/>\nCalcium salts are progressively deposited in the matrix of this area.<\/p>\n<p>2 &#8211; <strong>Zone of ossification<\/strong><br \/>\nThis region is highlighted in pink. An important difference: it contains small blood vessels (highlighted in red). Remember that cartilage is not a vascularized tissue.<br \/>\nThis zone contains many osteoblasts, besides other bone tissue cells, and bone marrow.
