The red line indicates the boundary between the both zones.<br \/>\nAbove the line see dead calcified cartilage cells. The area below the line is obviously occupied by another tissue: bone that has been deposited over the calcified cartilage septa. Precursors of bone cells accompanied the growth of blood vessels shown in the previous page.<\/p>\n<p>Lower image<br \/>\nThe upper part of the image has many empty spaces previously occupied by chondrocytes (highlighted in green) and the cartilage extracellular matrix highlighted in light blue.<br \/>\nIn the lower part of the image: the walls of cartilage extracellular matrix that surrounded chondrocytes are now covered by a thin layer of bone cells: osteoblasts, osteocytes (highlighted in pink).
