They are formed predominantly of compact bone, which provides mechanical strenghth and resistance against mechanical forces such as torsion, bending and compression.<br \/>\nThe diagram illustrates a small part of a cross-sectioned diaphysis.<br \/>\nNotice the following featurs:<br \/>\n&#8211; Four Haversian systems (osteons) are highlighted in different shades of blue.<br \/>\n&#8211; Stacks of flat or sligthly curved parallel bone lamellae fill the space between the Haversian systems.<br \/>\n&#8211; Haversian canals placed at the center of each Haversian system contain blood vessels and nerves (nerves not shown in the figure).<br \/>\n&#8211; Tunnels called <strong>Volkmann\u2019s canals<\/strong> placed perpendicular to the long axis of the bone carry branches of blood vessels and nerves between Haversian canals.
