Various types of <strong>transient cells<\/strong>, including leukocytes are commonly present in this tissue.<br \/>\nIts <strong>extracellular matrix (ECM)<\/strong> contains mainly collagen fibers that vary considerably in thicknesses and directions. Depending on the location and function of the tissue, elastic and reticular fibers may also be present. All of these fibers are embedded in an abundant  amorphous, non-fibrillar, <strong>extracellular matrix<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAs a result of the irregular arrangement of the fibers and the type of its ECM the loose connective tissue can not withstand strong mechanical forces, traction or pressure. On the other hand, this organization results results in the advantageous flexibility of this tissue.<br \/>\nAs it frquently supports lining and glandular epithelia it allows their restricted movement and protects them from mechanical damage. The loose connective tissue allows with much ease the diffusion of liquids, gases, nutrients and catabolites through its extracellular matrix. Loose connective tissue frequently supports lining and glandular epithelia. Its flexibility allows these epithelia to undergo a certain amount of movement helping to protect them from mechanical stress.<br \/>\nAnother important characteristic of this tissue is that its extracellular matrix provides a suitable pathway for the relatively easy diffusion of water, gases, nutrients, and metabolic waste products between blood vessels and the surrounding cells.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n  <div class=\"su-column su-column-size-1-2\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\"> <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mol-en.icb.usp.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/4-31-A.jpg\" \/><br \/>\nLoose connective tissue under the epithelium of the ureter.
