The epiphyseal bone, which is not highlighted, appears in the image as the reddish band above the resting cartilage (highlighted in. Its osteocytes are surrounded by a red-pink extracellular matrix.<\/p>\n<p>The resting cartilage has the typical appearance of hyaline cartilage. It consists of chondrocytes (highlighted in red) surrounded by a bluish extracellular matrix (highlighted in dark blue).<\/p>\n<p>2 \u2013 Proliferation Zone. In this area chondrocytes actively divide by mitosis and become organized into vertical columns, resembling stacks of coins. The chondrocytes are highlighted in red, while the extracellular matrix is shown in light blue.<\/p>\n<p>As chondrocytes divide, their daughter cells accumulate toward the end of this zone.
