A few flattened, spindle-shaped cells, can be observed on the bone surface. They are termed &#8220;inactive osteoblasts&#8221; but perhaps could be osteoprogenitor cells.<br \/>\n2 &#8211; <strong>Osteocytes<\/strong> &#8211; highlighted in green are located in small cavities called <strong>lacunae<\/strong> surrounded by the <strong> pink stained extracellular matrix<\/strong>. Two osteocytes (highlighted in dark green) located close to the trabecular surface may be cells that have been recently surrounded by bone matrix, having transitioned from osteoblasts to osteocytes.<br \/>\n3 &#8211; A <strong>osteoclast<\/strong> (highlighted in dark blue) is placed on the outer surface of a trabecula.
