A few flattened, spindle-shaped cells, can be seen. They are termed &#8220;inactive osteoblasts&#8221; but perhaps could be osteoprogenitor cells.<br \/>\n2 &#8211; <strong>Osteocytes<\/strong> highlighted in green are placed in small cavities called <strong>lacunae<\/strong> surrounded by the pink stained extracellular matrix. Two osteocytes (highlighted in dark green) placed close to the trabecular surface are possibly cells that became recently surrounded by bone matrix, having transitioned from osteoblasts to osteocytes.<br \/>\n3 &#8211; An <strong>osteoclast<\/strong> (highlighted in dark blue) is placed on the outer surface of a trabecula.
