Chemical signals released by damaged or dead cells and microorganisms attract various types of leukocytes and other defense cells to the affected area. The accumulation of these cells is called an inflammatory infiltrate. It is often accompanied by local edema (fluid accumulation in the tissue) and pain.<br \/>\nThe types of cells found in an inflammatory infiltrate can vary considerably. They depend mainly on two factors:<br \/>\n1. <\/strong>The agent that triggered the inflammatory reaction.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe cellular composition of the infiltrate can differ greatly depending on what caused the inflammation. For example, the response to a bacterium may differ from the response to a protozoan or to a physical agent, such as heat or radiation, which can cause tissue injury or a burn.<br \/>\n2. <strong>The time at which the tissue is examined<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe cellular composition of an inflammatory infiltrate changes as the reaction progresses. For example, a bacterial infection usually produces a rapid acute inflammatory response, in which neutrophils are the predominant cells. Macrophages may also be present, and eosinophils may occur in some circumstances. At later stages, neutrophils and other early inflammatory cells may decrease in number or disappear, while lymphocytes and plasma cells become more prominent. These cells may remain in the tissue for variable periods, particularly when the inflammatory reaction persists.<\/p>\n<p>In the image, the inflammatory infiltrate is highlighted in pink.
