In the lymph nodes, lymph is &#8220;filtered&#8221; by macrophages, as they have the opportunity to encounter and phagocytose small particles and microorganisms carried by the lymph.<br \/>\nThe arrows in the figure point to macrophages located in a lymph node.<br \/>\nNote that the cytoplasm of one of the macrophages appears to be &#8220;foamy&#8221; or vacuolated.
