NERVOUS SYSTEM
GANGLION
Ganglia are clusters of neurons present in the peripheral nervous system, therefore outside the central nervous system.
This image of a ganglion section shows numerous cells with bluish (basophilic) cytoplasm, large nuclei with loose chromatin, and voluminous nucleoli. These are neuronal cell bodies.
An important characteristic of the neurons of a ganglion is the presence of small cells that cover them. These are called neuronal satellite cells or glial satellite cells. They are highlighted in green when you hover the cursor over or click on the image.
