Below the muscularis mucosa (belonging to the mucous layer, highlighted in green) you will see the dense, desnse connective tissue that constitutes the submucosa.
The submucosal layer of some regions of the esophagus may contain mucous glands (highlighted in blue),a feature that helps to diagnose sections of this organ.
