HEMATOPOIESIS

CELLS OF THE ERYTHROCYTIC AND GRANULOCYTIC LINEAGES

Erythrocytic lineage

Basophilic erythroblast
A cell slightly larger than a red blood cell, with a dense chromatin nucleus and basophilic (blue) cytoplasm without granules.
Polychromatophilic erythroblast
Small cell, almost the size of an adult red bloo cell. Its nucleus has dense (strongly stained) chromatin, cytoplasm with a mixed color between pink and blue.

Granulocytic lineage

Myelocyte
Large cell, slightly basophilic cytoplasm (bluish), slightly indented nucleus containing nucleoli (small arrows). The chromatin is quite delicate, indicating that this is a poorly differentiated cell within its lineage.

Metamielócito eosinófilo
Smaller cell, nucleus in the shape of a thick, twisted rod, with eosinophilic (orange) granules in the cytoplasm.

Neutrophil metamyelocyte
Small cell, thick rod-shaped nucleus, lightly stained cytoplasm, with neutrophilic granules.

Also note some mature segmented neutrophils (not indicated by arrows).

Bone marrow smear. Staining: Leishman. Large magnification.
