CELLS OF THE ERYTHROCYTIC AND GRANULOCYTIC LINEAGES
Erythrocytic lineage
Proerythroblasts
Large cells with a large nucleus and intensely basophilic (blue) cytoplasm lacking granules.
Basophilic erythroblast
Cells slightly larger than red blood cells, with a dense chromatin nucleus and basophilic cytoplasm.
Polychromatophilic erythroblasts
Small cells, nucleus with dense chromatin, cytoplasm with a mixed color between pink and blue..
Granulocytic lineage
Myelocytes
Large cells, notched (indented) nucleus, granules in the cytoplasm (possibly neutrophil myelocytes).
Neutrophil metamyelocyte
Smaller cell with an elongated nucleus that has a deep indentation, and therefore is at a more advanced stage than myelocytes. The nucleus is beginning its lobulation stage. Its cytoplasm resembles that of a neutrophil.
